Meet the Potlicker

In Belize, dogs of uncertain parentage are called “potlickers” — and they’re wonderful dogs. Affectionate, friendly, protective of their owners, great with others and just genuinely happy dogs. Well suited to the tropical climate, potlickers are generally healthy with basic veterinary care. Too many never get the chance to truly love a person and be loved back. You could change that.

Belize Cats

Have we got a cat for you! Black ones, black and white ones — a Placencia specialty — brown, ginger, calico, tortoiseshell, white, striped… Our short-haired Belize cats are perfectly adapted to tropical life and thrive with even basic vet care. Note: keep cats on heartworm medication as they are susceptible when bitten by mosquitoes.

Jackson Turtle

Jackson Turtle — From Wanderer to Beverly Hills

Jackson was a sweet, free-spirited dog who loved people, chicken wings, and the freedom to roam. Adopted from PHS in 2010 as a guard dog, he had other ideas — earning the nickname Houdini for his escapes. He eventually found his way to Turtle Inn, where everything changed.

Christina Smith and Ed Natan from Beverly Hills fell in love with him on vacation in early 2016. After weeks of bonding — beach walks, golf cart rides, and sharing a bed — leaving him behind simply wasn’t an option. With help from PHS volunteers Mary Smith and Miriam DeShield, Jackson was fostered, vetted, and transported across three flights to his permanent home in California.

Now named Jackson Turtle — keeping Jackson because he knew his name, adding Turtle for where they met — he spends his days hiking, wrestling with his dog brother Waimea, and being welcomed into restaurants and wine bars across Beverly Hills.

Christina’s message: “Our deepest thanks to Mary Smith, Miriam DeShield, and all the PHS volunteers who made this wonderful success story possible.”
