Basic Puppy and Dog Care

Food

Young puppies need 2–3 small meals a day; older dogs can be fed once or twice daily. Dog food is best — check the label for correct portion sizes based on your pet’s weight. Meat and rice are okay, but never give chicken or fish bones, chocolate, or milk. Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water.

Bathing and Grooming

Bathe once every 1–2 weeks unless your dog gets into something messy. Don’t get soap or water in eyes or ears — only wash the top of the head. Don’t use flea or tick shampoo on puppies under 6 months old. Check ears daily for ticks and infection — wipe carefully with a slightly damp cloth if dirty, but don’t let liquid drip inside. Also check between toes and armpits for ticks and fleas.

Fleas and Ticks

Don’t let dogs sleep on sand — even a simple box with an old towel helps. Try to get your dog in the sea — ticks and fleas hate salt water (rinse with fresh water afterward). Skin medications like Frontline, NexGard, and NexGard Spectra work better than powders. If using a flea collar, make sure it’s not too tight — you should be able to fit two fingers underneath.

Training

Your dog needs love, attention, and training. Never hit your dog for discipline — a firm “no” is usually all that’s needed. Always praise good behavior. For training questions, come to the next vet clinic.
