TVT (Dogs Only)
Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT) is widespread in Belize and fatal if untreated — spaying and neutering is the only reliable prevention.
TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) affects dogs and is widespread in Belize, including Placencia. Without treatment, it is fatal.
TVT spreads through breeding. Both male and female dogs can get it. Any unspayed or unneutered dog allowed to run free has a high chance of acquiring TVT.
Symptoms include unexplained bleeding (in females, being in heat much longer than usual) and tumors in the genital area.
Although a form of cancer, TVT can usually be completely cured with a series of Vincristine injections. However, treatment is expensive and must be performed by a veterinarian.
Because TVT can be acquired again and again as long as a dog remains sexually active, the only reliable prevention is spaying or neutering — or keeping breeding dogs completely away from other dogs.
